Oral production laboratory in Tolosa: usage, attitudes and communicative competences

The main goal of this project is to build a laboratory based in the action research methodology that has grown in importance in the last decade.

We want to analyse, improve and foster the communicative competence of teenagers between the ages of 13 and 16. Our proposal covers students of all grades of Compulsory Secundary Education. It is at that valuable moment of life that students decide which language they will use and which attitude they will take towards each language (those languages being Spanish or Basque, in this case). As a matter of fact, that is when they start hanging with friends and choose the language they will use with each other. Besides, as years go by, they will find themselves in need to use their oral communicative compentences for more complex situations -speaking in public, giving their opinion or debating on various subjects, explaining specialised topics, etc. Therefore, we consider it to be an appropriate age interval for our project, since some of the contents will be useful for other languages too.

School year 2010-2011

The project set out in the school year 2010-2011. During the November to January period, Mintzola analysed the attitude towards language and the usage of teenagers in the first and third grades of Compulsory Secondary Education, in three different schools. We drew some very interesting conclusions:

  • The language used at home determines the attitude students take towards each language.
  • Age is also a determining factor for the attitude students take towards each language.
  • Not every school gives the same value to each language.
  • The language used to home determines the language students will use.
  • The sociolinguistic situation of the school conditions the language students will use.
  • The language chosen to communicate with friends changes with age.

Additionally, this year we have created a Monitoring Commission to manage workshops, which will also serve as consultancy service. The Commission is formed by Mintzola Foundation, the City Council of Tolosa, the three schools taking part in the project, the Provincial Government of Gipuzkoa, the Education Department, the Viceministry of Linguistic Policy, the Sociolinguistics Cluster and the journalist and presenter Kike Amonarriz.

During the school year 2011-2012, Mintzola will work on didactic materials for the four grades of the Compulsory Secondary Education.
